What Happens In Our Class?

What Happens In Our Class?

Hello – we are Secondary 1 (or Super 1 as we prefer to be known!) We currently have 5 pupils in our class this year – a mixture of Yr 8 to Yr 11; being grouped according to ability.  We have themed topics and two reading books every half term. For example, the Autumn Term topic is the Jungle, hence we are following 1) The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, and 2) Rumble in the Jungle – which develops rhyme (an important learning skill for pre-readers).

We follow a semi-formal learning approach, with lots of opportunity for hands-on exploration and sensory learning.

All staff work very much as a team throughout S1, S2 and S3 with built-in opportunities for the three groups to come together for joint learning through activities. We also have the support of Mrs Caie who helps us with our speech, language and communication. We use Makaton and BSL signing to help our communication.

The School Day

Our classroom is our key learning environment. We also have our own playground which supports our physical and social development, as well as being great fun! We use the cooking room and the ICT suite to enhance our learning and we regularly visit the play gym, the sensory café, Street Bikes, and the local shops.

Literacy and Numeracy are worked into the curriculum every day. The   following opportunities are provided within each of these days:

Monday –PE and Art

Tuesday – Cooking, Playgym, & Assembly

Wednesday – Science, Sing and sign

Thursday –Out and About – Lifeskills, Computing

Friday – Integrated Studies, Art, Humanities.

Weekly Assemblies

These offer the opportunity to reflect on aspects of humanity such as giving, caring, kindness, peace etc. The assemblies follow themes that are generic to all religions.  We actively promote a strong emphasis on respect for all beliefs, religion, and life choices. Behaviour and achievement are also rewarded by presenting children with certificates. For example, DoJo Champion (for Behaviour for Learning), Greatest Artist, British Values, Science Genious.

Every Wednesday we also have a singing and signing assembly led by Mrs Briggs and Mrs Caie.
