Drop Down Day: A Day with a Difference
Thursday, 14th March 2019
March 14th 2019 was our most recent Drop Down Day, this time it was called A Day with a Difference. It was a whole day of time table dedicated to understanding other people’s everyday challenges, such as; visual impairment, hearing impairment and physical disabilities. We had an amazing day which involved going to sessions ran by outside companies, including; Goal Ball UK, Guide Dogs, Just Different, Huddersfield Town Foundation, Music and the Deaf and a Silent disco all. Some classes even went into the community including a group of students who visited a cafe in Leeds called Café 21 which is run by a group of adults who have Down syndrome. One class went to Sainsbury’s and navigated themselves round it without their sight and another class went to the local Library to read books in braille and listen to audio books.
The whole day was a great success and our students really got involved and appreciated what it is like to have a different impairment/disability to their own. The feedback was great , such as; ‘today was brilliant, I loved the goal ball’ and ‘I wish we could do days like this every day’ some students even began to think about their experience saying ‘at first I was scared that I couldn’t see but then I realised I could use my hands to help me’.
Overall another amazing Drop Down Day, where all students and staff really embraced the day and had fun.
