Donation from Yvonne and Andrew Yates
Ravenshall School was recently surprised and touched to receive a call from an ex-parent whose daughter, Gemma, had sadly passed away whilst attending the school in 1998.
Yvonne Yates knew that at the end of every academic year, the Gemma Eastwood Award is presented to a Year 11 leaver who has demonstrated the skills of being a good role model to others, has resilience and positive attitudes. It is a much-coveted award!
On the 25th May 2018 Yvonne re-married, and in remembrance of her daughter on this special day, a Raffle was held to raise money for Ravenshall.
As Yvonne explained;
“Gemma would have been playing a major part on our day if she was still with us, therefore it would make our day even more special if we could do some good on her behalf”
The newlyweds, Yvonne and Andrew and their very generous wedding guests, raised £1,750 through their donations and presented the cheque to the school this week.
Two members of staff, Mr Stephen Caines and Mrs Jackie Kilbride taught Gemma during her time at Ravenshall and remember her fondly as being thoughtful, considerate and a good role model to her fellow students.
Accepting the cheque Mrs J Tate, Headteacher said;
“A huge Thank You to Yvonne, Andrew their families and guests, it is an honour and a pleasure to accept this generous donation which will be spent on improving our outside play resources.”
With the incredibly generous donation from Yvonne & Andrew, Ravenshall School decided to use the money to purchase two memorial benches (pictured below) in recognition of Gemma Eastwood. The benches will remain at the front of the school to provide a space for quiet reflection for both staff and students.
